Custom Facebook Share Image

When someone shares your website through Facebook, Facebook will add an image from your website to the post.

By default, the first image in your Gallery or Index Page will be used for the Share post.

You can control which image is used, by placing the desired image into the first position of your Gallery or Index Page. Each Gallery or Index Page will have a different image shared in the Facebook Share post based on their respective URLs.

However, if you wish to use a custom Share image to be used across the entire site instead, you can enable the Custom Facebook Share Image feature (Settings tab > Custom Facebook Share Image toggle):

To upload your custom share image

Enable the feature (toggle ON), then click the Choose File button to select your custom share image.

Image Requirements:

• Dimensions: 1200x630px WxH (1.91:1 aspect ratio)
• .gif, .png, .jpg, .jpeg file types accepted
• Avoid special characters and spaces in your filename

Click the Update Site button at the bottom of the Settings page to save your changes to your website.

The next time your website URL is shared, Facebook will use the new custom image.

Troubleshooting:

Q. My newly updated Custom Share Image does not display when my website is shared in a post (i.e. still shows the previous image)

A. Facebook caches images it has previously used for sharing your website. If your website URL was previously shared, Facebook may not immediately update its cache. To resolve this issue, you must clear your website URL from Facebook's cache by using their Invalidator tool:

Enter the URL that has the cached image, then click the Debug button to clear the cache.

You can then click View Details to have Facebook to Preview the latest data from your website:

The next time your website URL is shared, Facebook will refresh its cache to use the latest data from your website.

Q. Facebook crops the image used in the Share post

A. Facebook will automatically crop and center images to fit their 1.91:1 aspect ratio when using the first image in your Gallery or Index Pages. Since the first image in your gallery or Index Page isn't likely to be sized at 1200x630px (WxH), some cropping will occur when Facebook scrapes your site for content.

Enabling the Custom Facebook Share Image feature and using an image that is correctly sized to 1200x630px (WxH) will force Facebook to only use your Custom Share image and prevent any cropping.

Q. Facebook displays a random image or text for Pages and Blog posts

A. Since Pages and Blog Posts can contain any combination of Text, Images, etc., a default Share image is not set for these Page types.

Facebook will scan the Page or Blog Post for its Share post content. If the first element on your Page or blog post is an image, Facebook will generally pick up the image. If the first element is a text element, Facebook may use the text instead.

Enabling the Custom Share Image feature will force Facebook to always use the Custom Share Image you have uploaded.

Tip: If you are sharing your Page or Blog post to your own Facebook account, you can control the image that Facebook displays by uploading a custom image through Facebook's Share dialog box.
